The North Zones  Baptism in Breña Our visit from our dear friends from Arequipa who drove here to visit us, the Sotec Quispe We asked a couple of the Peruvian sisters if we could go with them to teach. It is tricky to get around but we found them. We got to hear them teach and it was such a marvel! They bore powerful testimonies and it would be impossible to imagine something more from the heart. On Saturday, we attended a baptism where a beloved uncle of one of our Peruvian sisters was baptized. Many of his family were there and Rich got asked to teach about the restoration. This is simple for us to do really. We have made a serious attempt to share with our drivers and others every day that we can. We love what we are doing. We can bear solemn witness to the truthfulness of Joseph Smith as the Seer of this dispensation. We know that the Book of Mormon is the instrument of the Restoration. It is true and we know that it is tangible evidence of the power of Joseph Smith's calling

Transportation, Supply Chain and Insurance Conundrums

Saturday Evening Baptism in Salamanca Last Sunday we attended church in the Rimac 1 ward way up near the Lima foothills. This is a poorer part of the world for sure. We truly felt at home, it takes 45 minutes to get there and cost us nearly $12 US to get there and back. We will need to figure that out. We came away with an invitation to a Family Home Evening Monday evening. Then the bishop asked us to speak in Sacrament Meeting next week. It will not be much because we will be with the elders speaking too. On Monday morning, Julie woke up feeling sick. Some rest and a few home remedies had her feeling better in short order. Rich went out for a few medical supplies and groceries.  We went back out to Rimac in the evening for the Home Evening.  The same drive that took 45 minutes on Sunday, took 2 1/2 hours Monday evening!  Traffic is crazy here!! We went to a member's house. It is a very low income and humble area. Likewise, not the kind of area we wanted to be walking around at n

Our First Transfer Week

On Sunday we attended two different wards.   We enjoy meeting the members. They are thrilled to have a couple serving here. This mission has never had a couple before. On Monday evening, we went with a driver to pick up a missionary from  a town near Barranquilla, Colombia. She arrived alone from Bogotá. She is beautiful, very sweet and seems to have her act together. On Tuesday we experienced transfers. We had been asked to provide food for the twenty or so who would arrive early and have to wait.  We cut up fruit for a good half hour and took sandwich fixings to the office. They had asked us to come “early” (7:30am), thinking this would be a hardship…We had a wonderful time getting to know so many of these remarkable young people. The office elders  had neglected to check the supplies of sheet sets and pillows. Each newly arrived missionary is supposed to get new sheets and a pillow. We had to hustle to Sodimac,  a sort of Home Depot, and bought sheet sets and pillows to get o

Last Sunday we attended three different wards with six pairs of missionaries. We are doing that to get acquainted with the assigned missionaries and the members in each ward. Wards are geographically oriented units with a bishop over each. Missionaries are from everywhere from Rockland, Idaho to Tarapoto, Perú.  We’ve had some trouble figuring out our phones. We have both a Verizon number and a Peruvian number.  In the end think we may have figured it all out… We’ll see how the next bill looks. We also had some challenges with the internet but it is the fastest service we have ever had. Two young sister missionaries have been helping us learn how to work the insurance system to get appointments for missionaries with health challenges. They are really sharp and one of them is a Peruvian so she hears all of the subtle vagaries of the language on the phone. It is tricky in Lima because they talk so fast here. We are getting the hang of it and made some appointments and paid a big bill
